The award-winning and critically acclaimed guitarist & singer SUSAN SANTOS whose oxblood vocals we have described as ‘wrigglesome‘ and whose ladyfingered blackstrap guitar-work we have described as “intoxicating” will release of sixth and newest studio album “Sonora” on 5 April 2024.
Susan Santos is a dedicated, self-taught, left-hand guitarist who resides in Madrid, Spain. Her unique combination of rhythm & textures is her trademark. The talented singer-songwriter has performed at events all around the world.
Susan won “Best Musician Performance” at the 2018 European Blues Awards, and “Best Female Album” at the 2019 LA Critics’ Awards.
As a tempter, and available right now, ready to stream, is the first single from Sonora, titled Hot Rod Lady, with a music video (shared below) filmed at Joshua Tree National Park, California.
The literal meaning of “sonora” in Spanish is (in feminine form) “sonorous” or “loud, so the word suits the type of compelling blues that Susan delivers. Furthermore, the heated subtropical saltiness of the Sonoran Desert is clearly another influence.
“Sonora” was recorded at Black Betty Studios, Madrid, and was produced by Santos and the noted Latin Grammy nominated Jose Nortes (The Bolivians.)
Hot Rod Lady opens with an authoritative surf-sounding spaghettini riff. The song narrative tells of a woman who speeds through her own dream-wilderness, exceeding all life’s limits. It seems that the only way she can maintain her sanity is to be consistently surrounded by the enthralling sound of screaming combustion as she roars across the travails of life, trailing an endless footprint of shattered relationships, discarded memories, and neglected lovers in her frenzied wake.
Sonora is available for pre-order from Susan’s own shop: https://www.susansantos.info/shop
