Although the Swedish vocalist and composer EMILIA MARTENSSON has been described as one of the most exciting vocalists in the UK jazz scene… her new sounds on “LOREDANA” sit easily in the ‘folk’ genre.
Her new project “LOREDANA” will be released on the 3rd of November 2019 on BABEL LABEL, and analyzes the difficulties and dispositions of the term “mother-child”. The album praises, critiques and extols unlimited references to the “mother / child relationship” and how these terms shape our future lives…
Inspired by four particular questions that Emilia asked of her audience, about their relationship with their mothers, the innovative and daring songs on this new album traverse the normal boundary lines between Scandinavian folk, jazz and art-pop. The new album features guitarist Luca Boscagin, percussionist Adriano Adewale, trumpeter Fulvio Sigurta and bassist Sam Lasserson.
When we listened to “Arm Ourselves” (out 4 November 2019) we found a gentle, acoustic-guitar accompanied by a descending wreathe of garland shaped vocals that seemed to be trapped in swirls, like confetti, in an uncertain wind. This was full of creamy petalettes of sound, with crunchy notes, sometimes wafery, and all touching in depth.
