Rolling Stone Country recently listed AUSTIN JENCKES as an ‘Artist You Need To Know’ and, on the strength of the new single “Fat Kid” (feat. Lori McKenna) taken from from Austin’s debut album “If You Grew Up Like I Did” (due 31st May, via Red Dot) we can see why…

Growing up in Duvall, Washington (a suburb of Seattle) Jenckes moved to Nashville six years ago to concentrate on performance & songwriting. He won the public vote in the playoffs of the reality talent show “The Voice” (U.S. Season 5) in 2013.
Jenckes is celebrated for his cathartic, moving vocals and his instinctive lyrical/melodic faculty. The language he uses is uncomplicated yet compelling; with his numbers written from a real-world viewpoint with moral values shining through.
As an acoustic number, the highly personalized “Fat Kid” is an unadorned, uncomplicated psalm of self-reference… perhaps, of understanding the misunderstandings that lie beneath ours fears and consequences.

Yeah, this is lined with a kind of beat-down, hometown bittersweet longing… but although it’s actually reasonably cheerful it’s not exactly happy-zone nostalgia either… this is a song of recall, ridicule and bother. The voice is sincere and untroubled and the song-style is hyper-effective.
