The majestic Wakefield (UK) rock n’ roll five piece The Incredible Magpie Band have released their debut album this month…
Eleven short, sharp, pop tunes, filled with memorable hooks and punchy 1960’s inspired Rhythm and Blues melodies.
The Incredible Magpie Band is: Lee Knowles (vox / guitar), Lou Taylor (bass / vox), Ben Hardcastle (lead guitar / vox), Matty Davey (guitar) and Ewok Layton (drums / percussion).
Their “Introducing” album will be launched this Thursday 14th May at the Hawley Arms, Camden.
We had a listen:
This starts with ‘All I Am’ which is an engaging strummer that grows abundant, with a lively rhythm, addictive chorus and yellow streaks of guitar that electrify the passages.
Although redolent of the 1960’s this track will also remind you of the Britpop era.
‘Money’ is a fine-beat pop number with a sunny outlook, smiling demeanour and imperturbable jollyness.
‘This Chose Me’ is permeated with a smoky blues atmosphere as a sour harp whines along to the brisk beat.
The talkative guitar gets a hold of the catchy tune and gives it a whisk. Smashing post-skiffle happiness reminiscent of The Searchers.
‘Foundation’ is twangy and sparkly with unabated strut and clever, clear voices that dazzle like hubcaps on a passing Buick Wildcat.
‘Roller Coaster’ is a fabulous creation — stuffed with twangy reverb and stretched vibrato (reminding us of Duane Eddy) but with an undeniable hook that is rousing and familiar. This has driving rhythms, and sweet, soul-surfing harmonies.
This is commercially viable harmony pop with catchy hooks and wonderful musicianship…
Flecked with genius…
