With recent packed performances at Canadian Music Week (CMW), showcased on CTV News, an opening spot for super group Magic! at the Mod Club, and a date at The Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts, the Julian Taylor Band has officially release their – already widely acclaimed – CD titled TECH NOIR.
Toronto-based award-winning songwriter Julian Taylor and his band are excited about the reaction of their long-awaited new album.
The first single “Never Gonna Give You Up” has already been nominated as a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition and the video has blown up on YouTube with more than 300,000 views – the track storming the Top 40 on the Canadian Alt Rock chart.
The band’s previous bass player, Ben Spivak, – who now plays with the massively successful “Magic” – co-wrote several songs and also plays on the Tech Noir album.
The band is currently composed of a group of terrific musicians – including: Julian Taylor (vocals and guitar), Jeremy Elliott (drums), Steve Pelletier (bass) and David Engle (keys).
We listened to single ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’:
Against a powerful, raw and emotional whirlwind of activity – in steps a sprightly vocal reminiscent of Ceelo Green – full of tragedy and irony.
A knot of guitar notes creates a hedge-work of intricate sounds.
A yellowed organ lightly slips in-and-out of the cracks.
Although the voice remains sweet and starry – it reaches a robust and manly stride.
This is striking neo-soul with courageously beefed up sounds. Hugely reinforced by impressive rhythms.
It has tremendous, savvy style and substance.
And it delivers the goods.
